I recently took a break from the forum, so I surprised to see this level of activity on an old post of mine. I feel as I haven’t addressed some of the concerns and criticisms raised by fellow members, so I’ll take the time to do so now.
@Psyvacy, thank you for your critique raised, I apricate the discussion and how I can improve in further attempts to analyze data. I totally agree that, in hindsight, the use of solely the measurement of the
reaction is not the most accurate way to measure the amount of negative news on the forum and does open issues of subjective content interaction. (Such as, if I was more prone to use reactions on negative posts.) Secondly, your point about the difference between virality and impact is huge and a great distinction. It also raises some interesting questions about interaction vs impact on platforms, especially as there is an increasing amount of “rage-bait” on many social platforms.
Also, I found the idea of intrusive thoughts being self-reinforcing to be very intriguing and something I defiantly will research in my free time.
As for @misterstrange774’s feedback, while I do agree that, as discussed before, my methodology of using reactions is flawed, as a regular of the forum, I noticed there defiantly was a increase in the reporting of negative news. In hindsight, I feel remorseful of my jokes towards Blankspace (aka @anon82669666) and can’t help but feel partially responsible for their departure, even if they said it was for unrelated reasons. I’ve talked to them on multiple occasions and apologized, and despite their assurance to me that they understood it was just jokes, I still regret my handling of the situation.
Moving on, I don’t think it’s productive to minimize legitimate anxiety caused by the frequently consumption of negative media. Although some people are unaffected, for some, the continuous loop of bad news can be very depressing and impact them negatively. I don’t mean to suggest that anyone needs to change how they react to posts, and my original post was not about negative reactions impacting me, but rather using my own reactions to judge how negative the forum was. (Which, as discussed before, is a flawed method.)
While I apricate @Psyvacy defending me, I don’t condone the hostility (on either side) and I certainly did not intend anyone to get worked up over my observation. I was simply trying to draw attention to a rise of negativity I increasingly saw affecting this community, try to explain / prove it with amateur data analysis, and provide advice / strategies to dealing with anxiety caused by negative media.
I personally apologize to Henry, Jonah, and Jordie for the headache this may have caused.
