Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins 🏆 (Week 62-63, Aug 8 2025)

Finally started backing up my files. I’ve been putting it off for the longest time. But I gave it a shot after some reflecting on what benefits backups/cloud syncing could have, and maybe from a bit of a discussion about the value of aiming for good security with @Ale.

I realize I do keep quite a lot of precious things in digital format, on an external Crucial SSD which although durable, is not immortal, like any hardware isn’t. And so I came to the conclusion it’s worth the extra effort & cost to get an encrypted cloud storage service to sync specific folders with in case the local drive dies. This way I can also keep using the SSD for as long as it lives, without needing to guestimate when it is too old to be trusted. And the lost applications I can reinstall anyway.

So I got Filen’s 500 GB plan and I’ve been liking it so far. A lot of the stuff I do for my studies involves big filesizes due to it being visual and auditory stuff. I set it up so it’s a one-way street of syncing to the server, but not the other way around. I do like that because this way I can’t accidentally delete something locally if I free up space on the server. It’s not the fastest but it gets the job done.

I do not know many people around me who also sync their files to a server other than OneDrive, and that’s only because that is preinstalled malware (in a hyperbolic way… or is it?). I really hope that changes when the EU sovereignty hype gets big enough and my friends start caring too. Will see : )
