I’ve been using the WhatsApp status update feature a lot in the last few weeks and it’s been pretty great! I like it because it slots in between social media and messaging in that I can share what’s going on in my life without blasting it to the whole world.
But why is this a privacy win?
- All status updates are end to end encrypted
- They only get sent to people in my contacts, and you can setup a blacklist and whitelist to control who gets to see which updates
- They disappear after 24 hours
Basically it’s the almost best version of the stories feature from Instagram and Snapchat.
If you want to try this out but don’t want to use WhatsApp, fret not. Signal’s implementation is even more private as it gives you more control over who can see your stories and where they will show up. They Signal does it is my favorite way, but alas I don’t have enough connections there to use it.
