Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins 🏆 (Week 53 - May 2 2025)

My personal wins of the week:

I finally got my local Pi-hole DNS working with my PC. I tried setting up a local DNS in Mullvad’s settings, but it never worked. So I downloaded the .ovpn file and set up the VPN manually using NetworkManager. It’s sooo satisfying to see my request going through and all the crap being filtered by my pi-hole. I could watch this all day.

On a related note, I recently noticed a lot of Ai-generated websites when I was browsing the web to get some information on the basics of setting up a homelab. These sites provided little to no information, were very superficial and decorated with Ai-generated images. This annoyed me so much that I wanted to take advantage of my pi-hole to block this crap. So I searched the web for blocklists specifically for this type of AI-generated website. To my surprise, I was not able to find anything useful, apart from a few lists that would generally block anything related to AI.
Logical conclusion: Create one your own!
So I made an account on Codeberg and started my first repository! :tada: Nothing fancy, but maybe some poeple can take advantage of this list. At the moment I only sporadically enter websites that catch my eye. But it would be great if others could also contribute to this list.

In addition, I was able to set up ArchiveBox in a Docker container to save websites that I like or that seem important to me. I like the idea of having my own personal archive that nobody can delete or edit. Especially in these times when fascism is on the rise and websites gets edited to fit their agenda.
