Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins πŸ† (Week 51 - Apr 18 2025)

I occasionally mess up either my Linux or Windows install on my desktop (which I am fine with). This time I managed to break both, somehow. This is relevant to both of my wins.

Installing secureblue

After having failed to get into QubesOS a long time ago due to a major bug (probably due to hardware incompatibility), I just went back to stock Debian without doing much hardening. When it came time to reinstall Linux, I thought secureblue sounded interesting, so I've decided to try it out. Although there is quite a bit of incompatible software (largely due to X11 deprecation, for security), it feels very stable, and I'm noticing that Fedora's GNOME feels a lot nicer than on Debian, although I'm not sure why. I figure it's probably time to learn SELinux now that I'm on a distro that relies on it.

DVD-based backups

When it comes to Windows, I realized too late that my Windows USB was corrupted. Microsoft's online ISO didn't work with dd, so I had to spend days finding someone who had a windows machine to use their Media Creation Tool. After finally managing to get Windows 11, I've decided that I'm now going to be using DVD storage rather than flash for my operating systems, so I now won't suffer from such data corruption πŸ˜…. I'm also considering making backups of my passwords and 2FA codes on DVD rather than just flash + cloud storage, although I need to figure out how to burn multiple backups to the same recordable DVD.
