Donāt know whether this is a privacy or a security win, but a small win for me. I managed to receive a used laptop from a friend of mine. The laptop is a couple years old, but it has hardly been used (they said it was just too slow).
So, I did what anything normal Linux enthusiast would do - transform it into a server (Nix of course). It now is going to be another extension of my homelab. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet, but hey the possibilities are endless .
I now operate my 3D printer completely locally on the network. Internet connection has been blocked and everything still works as it should. I didnāt think this would be so easy because Bambu Labs was in very negative headlines because of their cloud compulsion. But LAN only works smoothly.
Hopefully final win but fine if not.
Another transition to Aegis (local android) to Ente Auth. Not necessarily of the cross platform usage but rather I wanted to get comfortable enabling 2FA for most of my important services
Techlore here and now Proton!
Figured out I had DNS leaks on the virtual machines I use for work, and fixed them
Maybe not directly privacy-specific, but anti-corporate. Got bored of youtube and memes andā¦genuinely started reading, even with interest. It hasnāt happened to me for a long time.
Happy smartphone win for me, I have installed Calyx OS on a Fairphone!. Bye bye manually de-googled and āend of lifeā Samsung phone. I also feel like Fairphone is quite deserving of their profit through my purchase. Thatās one less (arguably big) purchase funding the big tech companies!
On Calyx OS I put all my work related apps on the special āwork profileā they made which completely isolates them from my personal activites, but they can still appear on the same homescreen, appear in the main notification bar, without having to switch profiles.
Then I configured RethinkDNS on both personal and work profile separately so that they go through different VPNs (just using different Mullvad VPN wireguard config files). Itās crazy to me I can now run 2 separate VPNās, separate firewalls, separate DNS blocklists, on the same phone at the same time, seamlessly.
A more minor privacy win, but I've been able to (mostly) get off of Spotify and instead listen to music locally on both my computer and my car. The car is more critical because it means I no longer need to connect my phone to my car anymore, but instead a simple flash drive. This is something I've previously had problems with, as the car would insist that I give it contacts and other privileges, when all I want is to play music.
I do want to stop sharing my listening history with Spotify, but I still do have it on my phone, as I only have about 128 gigabytes of storage, and I don't want to spend a fourth of that on songs. So I still need to figure out some way to get away from Spotify without having to take up so much phone storage.
Welp I have 2 wins again for April
1 I used Bluesky more often after leaving Twitter/X.com
2 I Encrypted most of my files before sharing them on Discord
I donāt know how much music you have, but I highly suggest self-hosting a music server. It is like your own personal Spotify that can be streamed from all your devices. This is the one I personally use: https://www.navidrome.org/
Also no need to go big on hardware either, it can run on a raspberry pi, or a cheap used intel NUC for $30.
So, I finally got to try Gentoo at a virtual machine, because I want to compile apps from source so much! I really, really wanted that workflow for a while. It took the whole day to setup stuff, and the kernel didnāt compile for whatever reason. But still Iām super happy, I learned some linux thingies along the way and got the ball rolling. I also read that Steam Proton can be installed on Gentoo, so maybe one day Iāll set it up for games.
There was a short on Techlore Clips about someone who have signed up to OpenStreetMap and added local markers there. So that was pretty cool, so I followed the example. Itās an awesome feeling when you look at the map and āHey, I added this.ā
