Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins šŸ† (Week 49 - Apr 3 2025)

they did increase the price since the 7 and 8a but I’ll let that slide I guess…

In this week, my privacy improving was mainly on my phone.

I switched to open source alternatives. The main ones being FOSS alternatives to Google Phone and Messages. Also replaced the manifacturer’s camera app to Secure Camera, switched from watching youtube in the yt app to newpipe, downloaded music so i can listen to them offline with vlc. Downloaded Aurora Store and F-droid. On that note, i installed Florisboard as an open source alternative to Gboard, and i love it so far. And finally replaced Google Maps with Organic Maps. Whenever i need google maps services like travel planning i only use it inside brave.

Other thing is i am working on migrating my 2fa from Aegis to Ente. So far so good

There’s a reason for that. Imagine you lost all your devices and backup options. You will be locked out in this extreme and unlikely but not an impossible scenario.

I believe a unique strong password used for one thing only, i.e. your password manager is enough even in the worst case scenario to get back into your accounts with your new devices.

This is the ultimate contingency set up.

I know I’m kind of late to the RSS party and removing algorithms from our lives, but I’ve finally been able to purge my influence from content recommendation feeds.

On the social media platforms I still use (YouTube and Lemmy), I now only sort by new, and I now get my news with the NewsFlash RSS reader, which I feel fits in well with the Gnome desktop. It feels a lot more reliable and purposeful than getting my news from YouTube or Reddit.
