Got a new router that isn’t spying on me. After getting fiber internet, they provided Plume pods as the default router, but the only interface is through a phone app, and they get all my data sent to them. It does come with really nice features and doesn’t look predatory, amazing for most people, but it was too limited for what I wanted to do.
SO I went overkill and got a BananaPi R3 and installed OpenWRT on it. I realize now I could have gotten a cheaper router that’s supported by OpenWRT (there are tons) and use that instead, so if anyone wants to try OpenWRT, you don’t have to buy another computer like I did.
Learned a lot in the process, and now have a lot of possibilities. So I added on a 2TB M.2 storage onto it and set it up as a WebDAV share, so now I have another place to backup anything on my phone onto it periodically, mostly pictures.
Also got adblock set up on the router. Looking to add wireguard VPN or use Tailscale on it so I can securely connect to it from anywhere and manage my home network.
