Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins 🏆 (Week 42 - Feb 14 2025)

A dedicated place to share all of our wins! :trophy: Welcome to our 42nd week of privacy & security wins

Now, this only works if you all want it to work. That means:

  • Don’t be shy! Even the smallest win is something you can share. The more of you who contribute the better it is for everyone
  • Be positive. Remember we’re all in different places of our journey. Someone enabling 2FA on their first account can be just as excited as someone who figured out how to install Qubes on their new system. Give each other some love!

I’ve just posted my first post in my blog! I’m not going to link it because before I go completely public I’d like to write more content, but I had fun writing it!

(even after I had a stroke with the site’s code)

ah yes that feeling. Speaking of I should continue mine with publishing forward the one article and then moving on to the other.

I now completely control my router. And completely control my server. In fact, they are the same device.

Networking is a pain, send help.

It is not clear why you have the word trustworthy in quotes like this when mentioning VPNs “trustworthy”.

So, it is only not quite trustworthy? Either they are or they are not. I don’t follow.

Had one of my friends install Brave Browser.

I… honestly don’t remember doing that. I’ll take them out. Thanks!

though they say 100s of perspectives are good, there is such thing as disagreeing or concerning of such perspectives and I’m not really liking that you’re going against Proton in recommendations when this was resolved for good.

That was a personal preference for their own reasons but they do make it clear that it is still a great option from a product and technical POV for what they provide and do.

But yeah - the issue has been cleared though and I wouldn’t not fully recommend it. It is a non issue now - a small faux pas can always be forgiven.

Somehow, I missed that post. I’ll consider updating my blog.

I did mention, however, that Proton is still great from a technological standpoint.

I moved all of my media out of iCloud and into Ente Photos! :slightly_smiling_face:

I also convinced a family member and a friend to back-up their media on Ente.

Ah, I thought you knew it… hence my comment.

I got a VPN running on the old computer I recently set up running Linux. I don’t have a graphical display that it is active, so I am hunting for terminal commands to see what is on/functioning. Additionally, my NAS is working, so my icloud items are getting cleared.

What do you mean? Is this CLI only Linux? I don’t understand how you mean it and the type of set up you really have. Please elaborate if you are able. Thanks!

Well here’s a win for today:
I got my friend to use disappearing messages (the 4 week one) on Signal!
:tada:

yeah it seems they’re reffering to CLI

Tons of great recommendations in here. I will have to try out gemini, it sounds like good fun if I can learn how to use it well. Good work, keep up the blogging hellfire!
