Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins 🏆 (Week 40 - Jan 30 2025)

A dedicated place to share all of our wins! :trophy: Welcome to our 37th week of privacy & security wins

Now, this only works if you all want it to work. That means:

  • Don’t be shy! Even the smallest win is something you can share. The more of you who contribute the better it is for everyone
  • Be positive. Remember we’re all in different places of our journey. Someone enabling 2FA on their first account can be just as excited as someone who figured out how to install Qubes on their new system. Give each other some love!

Learned a few new things from the latest macOS ultimate privacy guide video and implemented them. But still learning about the many objective see tools and trying to for those in my set up and threat model.

That’s pretty much it this week.

I’ve revived my home server, now with a two-drive raid configuration for files that matter, and a single nvme for files that don’t

What’s the set up like at large though, for you? How do you use and why do you have it that way?

(out of curiotisy)

I host forgejo (for code), jellyfin (for videos), immich (for photos), home assistant (for literally one smart outlet) and wireguard (for accessing the home network). I use an extra nvme because the drives are kind of slow, and I don’t want to run my whole OS on them, so I don’t

Would have a guide for how to self host for non techical (but still very tech savvy) folks that also includes how to maintain it?

I’d love to self host many small FOSS apps/products available - not necessarily to save money but to also learn.

Introduction to a Self Managed Life: a 13 hour & 28 minute presentation by FUTO software

It covers literally everything (but no my setup, I use nixos)

Thank you! I did see the post and have it saved. Just haven’t gone through it all cause its a lot.

One more “win” from yesterday I suppose:

Moved from Plex to Jellyfin. I don’t know why I waited so long to do it. It’s much better now that I am using it in full. And being FOSS is just the tops.

  • I’m doing similar things as I did last week: deleting accounts. My reservations so far:

    • I was able to finally delete my Amino account via the app (I reflashed my Pixel with the latest public build, I hope that it I don’t have to do it again).
    • Some services will wait a couple of days before they delete your account.
  • Re-assembled my laptop with a fingerprint reader. The downside is that I was only able to get it working on Windows.

I’ve begun the long and arduous process of erasing a large part of my digital footprint, and I’m helping my dad switch to SearXNG (DuckDuckGo wasn’t giving him good enough results).

Also, I can’t remember if I mentioned this before, but I managed to get my family to use Signal instead of WhatsApp.

If I can be bothered, I also hope to start using profiles on GrapheneOS to separate the few proprietary, Microshit, and Google-infested apps I have from the rest of my stuff.

This weekend I will be getting a “new to me” computer I can use to install linux and get started with that. I also had to deal with an update on my mac which ended up including AI, which was promptly stopped. Moving to linux will help me get away from that and help switch accounts contact information faster.

Given the news, a number of ladies in a discussion group who have discounted privacy talk I have brought up for a long time are now actively beginning to look for privacy respecting options.
