Your Weekly Privacy & Security Wins 🏆 (Week 2 - Apr 19 2024)

A dedicated place to share all of our wins! :trophy: Welcome to our second week of privacy & security wins

Now, this only works if you all want it to work. That means:

  • Don’t be shy! Even the smallest win is something you can share. The more of you who contribute the better it is for everyone
  • Be positive. Remember we’re all in different places of our journey. Someone enabling 2FA on their first account can be just as excited as someone who figured out how to install Qubes on their new system. Give each other some love!

I’ll go first! I recently took a new position with Cake and so I’ve been spending the last couple weeks figuring out workflows to juggle things and compartmentalize—but still be able to conveniently check everything.

The good: I figured out a nice solution that’s been working super well!
The bad: it requires two laptops and two phones

Having multiple positions definitely increases the complexity of things! But I’m just super happy to have locked in a workflow that allows me to still get stuff done

I just became a piracy god. I made an app that allows me to download and watch movies like I’m using a streaming service, but preserving my privacy and money. I have also set-up tailscale to develop on the go. (I have likes from Jonah and jordie! Only Henry is left : ). Update: I now have likes from the entire techlore team)

That sounds really cool

I made a few people shift to signal.

I did a presentation on privacy, cybersecurity, and government surveillance and it went really well. Everyone seemed super entertained (especially during the hacking demos :joy:) and asked a bunch of great questions.

I was wondering the other day how you got on with that. Would you still be interested in doing a censored version (for the want of a better word) for the forum?

Maybe, I would have to cut out the majority of it though. Most of it is specific to the organization or is a live demo, so overall wouldn’t be that interesting. If there is significant interest, I’ll go through censoring it and posting it.

  • I’m interested in seeing it

I shared a tuta blog on whatsapp-privacy-encryption-relation with meta with 3 friends of mine on signal and they seem convinced by the blog and now take my messages seriously and check my messages more often than before on signal. I am happy to finally have signal as my primary communication method with few people I know.

I introduced Briar to my mom when we didn’t have internet. She seems to like the simplicity of it. We still mainly use WhatsApp, but it sometimes can be temporarily blocked by government. (Easily bypassable by a VPN, but it can also be unavailable). That’s when Briar’s use of Tor will come in. SMS is the last option as neither of us have it included in our ISP plans. Time will tell if this introduction will pay off.

Failed. Most of these places got removed from GMaps servers for, obviously, vandalism. But in the app it tells me there’s no internet connection and loads the cached versions of these places. And I still get updates of the places they were from.

Thank you for the suggestion. As a basic navigator, it’s ok. In every other aspect it feels unfinished. You can share the links to places, but you can’t bookmark them (rant). In the settings you can’t interact with anything. And, lastly, no dark mode :frowning:

edit: My plans for the next week:

  • Move Google accounts from Kiwi browser to Mulch
  • Move Twitch, Github, Xbox, Microsoft and other big tech services to Cromite
  • Introduce my mom to ProtonVPN

I have finally dual-booted Linux on my laptop!!! Fedora Workstation to be precise. Special thanks to @Jonah for PrivacyGuides recommendation of Fedora as a good entry-level OS. Also thanks to everyone who advised me on the various hiccups I may come across in the dual-boot proces…it really helped me a lot!!

Looking forward to pushing my privacy journey a step further with this new beginning!! It’s only been a couple hours using Fedora and I absolutely love it!

Is it cheating if I say the same thing as I did last week for a different device? Oh well, I’m doing it anyway! :smiling_imp:

I have built up a number of applications on my laptop that I don’t use and as a result have downloaded Revo Uninstaller to clean it all out. Not sure if it is the best tool for it (JayzTwoCents on YouTube gave it high praise recently) but it is such a rewarding and freeing experience cleaning all this stuff up.

As a side note, I really love this idea of a weekly privacy/security victories. It’s amazing seeing people share victories of all sizes and everyone being supportive of those victories in one way or another. Plus it will remind me to keep making some sort of progress on my own journey .

This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while but I don’t exactly have the clout to do it yet lol. I’d love to see this stuff being talked about in many institutions with speeches/presentations targeted towards different age demographics.

That aside though, well done mate. Hopefully you changed some minds!

Migrating away from my old Google phone a Samsung S7, I got a Tello SIM in the mail, as I want to be able to swap devices, as I want. They do offer an eSIM.
My old Google phone has been kept around to handle password resets etc on old gmail accounts and to run MySudo as my main phone is running CalyxOS.
At a $1.50 a month I have a finite time to move away from MySudo as there is only so much money on my Google Pay account and I do not plan to add anymore.
