WhatsApp introduces usernames days after Signal

This is why signal is, IMHO, the most important im tool that exists. It’s become a sort of a standard that every im service that wants to brag about being secure has to compare itself to.

Not surprising. Both services use the Signal Protocol. Now that the protocol supports usernames, it only makes sense that WhatsApp would implement the feature.

For those interested:

This appears to be only for the newly introduced “channel” feature? I’m not sure that it will be like Signal and allow you to communicate with people without sharing your phone number.

Not really. Support is way outside of the scope of the Signal protocol, which only deals with the encryption of 1 to 1 messages. WhatsApp and signal have taken different approaches to groups and WhatsApp protects much less metadata than Signal.
