What are your thoughts on Posteo?

What are your thoughts about the Email Provider Posteo? I only see people talking about mailbox, they’re both pretty similar but I just wanna hear what you think about it.
Based in Germany, pretty good reputation, kinda dated Webmail interface but I only really use email clients anyways. Kinda feel like it deserves the same representation as mailbox unless I’m missing something, anyways interested to see your answers!

I have used it 1 year ago to test it out so the experience is good if not great but not having E2EE (by default) is kind of a shame but you can enable it! :

You can also encrypt your address book and your contacts :

It is very similar to Mailbox, but I like Posteo better overall. Mailbox has a confusing UI and some of their features are a bit half-baked. Privacy Guides delisted Posteo because they have a DMARC policy of “none”, which isn’t great, but isn’t the end of the world either, in my opinion. Overall, I think Posteo is the best $1/month private email option. I went into a bit more detail in a blog post here: Finding a Privacy-Friendly Email Provider - Gunther's Guides & More

In 2013, after the sudden shutdown of Lavabit in response to a secret demand by the FBI that it turn over the server’s TLS private key (because Edward Snowden was a customer), I set about looking for a replacement. My choice was Posteo.

Factors favoring Posteo include:

• The ability to encrypt data at rest on the server including email, calendars, and contacts;
• A years-long track record in providing email service, which is Posteo’s core business;
• A sustainable business model;
• Highly reliable service;
• Non-anonymous corporate leadership;
• Less likely to be blocked than better-known private email providers such as Proton. For example, you can access Posteo in China without a VPN;
• Modest pricing;
• Anonymous payment options, including sending cash in the mail.

I like everything about them but they don’t support custom domains which is a deal breaker for me.

I was really impressed with Posteo, I used them for over a year before switching to Proton, and Posteo’s services were very user friendly and simple!

Ah I was wondering why they didn’t have Posteo listed, thought it was just because they didn’t know it existed tbh

That’s something a lot of other Email providers don’t offer right? AFAIK proton can’t encrypt your contacts

Why did you switch?

AFAIK Tutanota offers address book and contacts encryption (by default).

Proton only encrypts the display names and email addresses of these contacts at rest but they don’t have Zero-knowledge encryption, so Proton can still access your contacts, quoting Proton :

Your contacts’ display names and email addresses are encrypted at rest but are not secured using zero-access encryption. This means that we can access this information.

As of today, still no DMARC policy…

Maybe let’s send an e-mail to them…

I think the PG team already reached out to them and they said they have no plan to change it (Remove Posteo and updated criteria by tommytran732 · Pull Request #369 · privacyguides/privacyguides.org · GitHub) but it can’t hurt to have more people bring it to their attention.
