I have two distinct issues with the current ads: they’re often targeted and manipulative by nature.
Targeted ads aren’t just privacy invading, they also waste a lot of computer resources.
The manipulative nature of ads is more subtle and subjective. Personally, I don’t like to be intentionally manipulated (think ad companies, sociopaths, scammers, etc.). However, if I’m actively looking for help, I don’t mind recommendations or tips (think friends, forum posts, YouTube videos, etc.). Basically, I want see or hear only that which I want to see or hear, i.e. I want autonomy.
Howerer, I understand that our current economy relies on ads (perhaps too much). So a compromise like “acceptable ads” might be best for everyone. It’s definitely better than our current ad system.
