Questions about degoogling and privacy

For privacy from Google (which is often just making sure Google doesn’t send out any data from your device), I’d recommend Canta on F-Droid to remove Google stuff.

Google Play Store can be easily replaced with Aurora Store, as it acts as the private wall between you and Google, while still providing all functionalities you’d expect. Remove Galaxy Store using Canta, because it’s not privacy-friendly. And if you’re worried about your IP leaking to Google when using Aurora, use a VPN. It’s a sure way to leave Google in the dark.

Context:
About a year ago I removed 90% of Google’s app infrastructure from my Samsung phone using Canta, and the app has only gotten better since then. Extremely user friendly. Though, Canta needs Shizuku running, and depending on your general tech-usage competence you might need at most 10 minutes to set up Shizuku with Canta. Shizuku app is found in the Play Store and as an APK online at IzzyOnDroid.

If you want to go deeper on a Samsung phone, I’d recommend firewall apps since they can monitor ingoing/outgoing traffic much better than us just guessing which apps have Google telemetry and which don’t.

  • I use RethinkDNS, (which is from F-Droid) for this due to it’s flexibility in me setting a Google blocklist for my entire phone’s internet traffic which just a few clicks.
