Protonmail catch-all address

Can the Protonmail catch-all address be used as a wildcard address? Where I could create a new on the fly email addresses to give out in public if needed? Like whatever@mydomain.com and that would show up in Protonmail and I could reply from that address?

Yes you can! I have tested it myself with my custom domain in Proton and anything I type @mydomain.com arrives in my inbox flawlessly

Awesomeness! Thanks!

Thinking of switching from Tuta.

Replies work too? Because I was pretty sure you couldn’t easily reply from the same address that the catch-all email was sent to.

I could be wrong because I only use SimpleLogin aliases personally, so I haven’t tried it recently.

Replies has more friction because you kind of have to register that specific address so that it shows up in the drop down list of emails you can reply from, but it’s not impossible. You have a max of 15 addresses (I have Proton Unlimited) at any one time. You can delete the one you use when you’re done with it I guess.

You are correct it doesn’t work like that for replies, you have to create an alias in the account settings to reply with that address.

The problem with this is that when you create a new alias it generates a public and private key for that address, you can only delete that alias if you delete all the emails associated to that email address. This is where the 15 alias limit starts becoming a problem in Proton Mail.

I would say if you don’t use PGP then use your custom domain with SimpleLogin instead of Proton Mail that way you can get around this issue.

@b-9 Tuta has this functionality maybe give that a look! oopsy didn’t read the whole post x_x

Thanks for all the responses! It gets complicated quick.

@Jordan I am aware that Tuta has catch-alls. I am just leaning towards Proton, unfortunately after just paying for (a month) of Tuta.

Does a paid Protonmail account included SimpleLogin premium?

It depends which plan you select, Unlimited, Family and Visionary include SimpleLogin Premium.

What issue were you having with Tuta?

Thanks. Thought that was the case

Yeah, my overall point was that a catch-all is not really the best solution for most people, and a dedicated aliasing service like SimpleLogin is almost certainly what you want to be using.

No issue with Tuta really.

Just a change of heart. Proton feels better to me. Just like it better using them side by side/at the same time.

Didn’t really give Proton much thought for some reason, I was set on Tuta and I didn’t love ProtonVPN when I used it. Just changed my mind.
