Petitions very rarely work, especially when you’re petitioning the ones doing the damage. I’d still encourage folks to sign, and also contact your MP (notifying them of this, and your stance). Just don’t get your hopes up. This seems to be a bipartisan issue, between the two main parties (The Red Tie Tories and Conservatives).
This also should have been done months ago. Never too late, I suppose.
Your are correct my MP already knows my stance but he is a Tory who supports it.
This has not had much coverage in the UK main media as we have other issues that better for main stream media to cover
