PC Security Channel: How tech companies spy on you and which is the worst? (YouTube Video) (Showcasing Idle System Connections)

PC Security Channel: showcases how many connections are made while the system is idle.

HTTP protocol is generalized for HTTPS, most of that traffic is being sent through that.
also HTTPS only does encryption between you and the site, doesn’t necessarily prevent data from being collected. so HTTP and HTTPS wouldn’t have mattered. [and you can also see in the video, the ports were 443 on http meaning it is HTTPS]
Not to mention that what TPSC channel failed to mention is the data that comes outside of these connections. Whenever I’d be Valve and EA Tracking what games you play or EA tracking what you do in these games and the fact that they collect every system information or all the communications inside the EA app or games not being end to end encrypted or metadata minimized, etc.
(which is something I am looking to verify through my gaming privacy investigation)

The purpose of his video wasn’t to discuss the activities you perform within those applications or type of data collected, but rather to highlight the type of tracking that occurs when the system is idle, so, as in when the application isn’t being used and how many connections are made. (Perhaps he should have made that evident in the video title. However, he does mention it in the video itself, explaining what he is testing and showcasing.)

Steam and EA’s application, while idle and not in use, do not track user activity to the extent like other applications. Is what he was pointing out.

I didn’t mention that it would stop data collection. I was simply stating that I observe HTTP protocol requests and, if they are unencrypted, I consider that an issue.

I was expressing my hope that while they are collecting this telemetry, they would be storing and handling it appropriately as in transporting it over encrypted connections.

I don’t believe or hope anyone would assume that simply because a request is made over HTTPS that it automatically means that data collection is not occurring. As, that is not the case.

Thank you for the clarification. I wasn’t paying attention to the ending of the host URL. I was looking at the protocol. My bad.

I will remove this comment from the main post.

As, it is no longer of question or was correct.

Most of the connections are from Microsoft.

Ugh, Windows classic!

…it’ll be super interesting to do this on Android…

Yeah, the scenario it’s pretty similar. My stock Android phone even when it’s offline, checking through RethinkDNS logs I see a LOT of pings to 8.8.8.8 from the Android package, even being mostly deGoogled and using custom DNS servers. Quite annoying; specially if you’re using limited mobile data and your phone pings servers unnecessarily, costing you more money. It was pretty interesting how when I started using the RethinkDNS firewall on my phone I saved up a bunch of money on mobile data, what a casualty isn’t it?

Indeed, the extent of bloatware in Windows has significantly impacted its performance, resulting in slower execution and increased resource consumption.

I wish Microsoft would release a stripped-down version of Windows, free from bloatware and telemetry. An operating system that only occasionally connects to the updating server.

As the PC Security Channel mentioned, they didn’t have telemetry back then, and it worked flawlessly. Telemetry to extent they do it now is not really necessary.

I would argue that Windows 7 and 8.1 (I personally enjoyed, while others detested it) marked the last great era of Windows in terms of Microsoft’s level of intrusiveness.

Never mind, I found an official Microsoft de-bloated Windows 11 OS. With 10 years of update support.

It’s always gotta be windows and microsoft babe. Just debloat it (optional) and make it O&O ShutUp10 (see what I did there, k ill head myself out)

let me get this straight, what is your android configuration and stuff? It could be your router DNS is set to that for example. But it’s best we know the configuration for sure to tell

That’s why personally Windows XP and 7 are very underrated OSes :joy_cat:
