Microsoft starts testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu

Microsoft says it’s starting to test ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11. The software maker will use the Recommended section of the Start menu, which usually shows file recommendations, to suggest apps from the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft started testing ads inside the File Explorer of Windows 11 last year before disabling the experiment in beta versions of Windows 11. Microsoft has been experimenting with ads inside Windows for more than 10 years. There are already promotional spots on the Windows 10 lock screen and in the Start menu, so it’s not exactly surprising to see them appear in Windows 11, too.

What a time to be alive!

How do normies tolerate this shit?

The truth is normies dont install other operating systems. Uncle Tim who uses facebook doesn’t care. Wouldn’t even know where to begin, and its not his fault. He just wants his computer to work.

These companies are praying on those who are less tech-literate. It’s predatory.

This is the “googleificaiton” of windows.

Windows is no longer a home user OS. It is an enterprise cloud OS. You don’t own your computer.

“Normies” don’t know any better. Most of the people just use the system/computer/phone as they bough it. The pinnacle of customisation is changing the wallpaper.

Recently I had the misfortune to see the internet without any adblock. It’s absolutely insane! I don’t understand how normal people can even function there. Basically most of the pages are 90% advertisement and 10% content. Just to read a simple article is a struggle. Big header ad, title, perex, [fullscreen newsletter modal] … , ad, paragraph, autoplay video ad, paragraph, subscribe, paragraph, sponsored links:exploding_head:

So, most users will take it as it is.

Same way they tolerate Twitter. People hate change more than they hate software bloat

what stopping you? which software do you rely on that isn’t available on linux?

Similarly, I was using a friends phone who didn’t have any adblock or dns filtering. On a news article, there was legimatly a singular line you could read because the rest of the screen was entirely filled with ads that you had to manually close out or scroll past. It’s absurd and feels like that one scene in Ready Player One.

“Sell up to 80% of the players visual space before causing seizures.”

This is basically the ad support written web.

Unfortunately some of us are stuck having to use MS programs for work and trying to keep as much privacy and ad-blocking as we can obtain against these arrogant corporate assholes.
