I want to use mega for photo storage but is that recommended. Is it private and secure?
I’d say that for the most people is completely ok to use MEGA. Especially if you want to use it as photo backup - their app is really good. Last update added album creation to the Android app.

If you’re uploading sensitive data, such as your diaries or photos of your bachelor party, it’s important to encrypt them before uploading them to a cloud drive anyway. Use something like Gpg4win (on windows) symmetrical encryption feature (AES 256) or paranoia works file encryptor (cross platform, suppors many encryption algorithms) or open keychain symmetrical encryption (android version of gpg) to encrypt important files before uploading them. The simplest and easiest thing to do if that sounds too complicated is to compress them into a password protected zip archive.
Remember that encryption is only as good as your encryption key (or password).
