So I’ve been very loosely considering setting up some kind of professional social media presence for my research work (for those who aren’t aware, I’m a PhD student in psychology). The thinking being it would improve my visibility to potential employers, colleagues etc. Obviously there’s potential downsides here, that’s not what I’m asking about.
My question is: does anyone have any good recommendations for Mastodon servers? I know some get a bit twitchy with the block lists, and I don’t want to potentially miss out on useful connections. The most obvious one is one of the Academic-focused servers, I suppose, but on the other hand academia can be a bit special sometimes, so even though I’m just using it for strictly professional stuff, I’m conscious of the risks.
(That said, I’m aware that Mastodon does not have the reach traditionally associated with what Twitter had, and has a generally pretty different set of norms and dynamics, so maybe that’s not so much a problem.)
