Run Software / Advance Science / Earn Forum Badges
Folding@Home is a project that lets you donate your spare CPU/GPU cycles to advance scientific research and fight global health threats like Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer, and COVID-19. By running the F@H software, your computer will run complex protein simulations in the background, and send the results of those simulations to academic researchers around the world to use in their projects.
These simulations are computationally very challenging, thus being able to split the workload among thousands of volunteers provides researchers access to results that wouldn’t be possible to obtain on regular computers. To quote their project: “We need every ounce of computer power we can get!”
You can join Techlore Folding Team #228579 and get awarded points every time your computer completes a protein folding simulation. That will help us advance our team up the global leaderboard, and you can compete with others on our team for top ranking
There’s forum badges and titles in it for active contributors, and it’s all for a good cause! Visit Distributed Computing for more info.
Did you set up a passkey like it says in the guide? Because if so you’ll start earning more points after completing 10 WUs, and I’m sure you can easily hit a million points in well under a week once that happens.
Started folding at home. Can we fold elsewhere? Completely unrelated side note, is it illegal to start folding on company servers? It’s for a good cause no?
Yay, I managed to fold 14k! However, my gpu is crying, so I might need to give it a break lol. I really like how you can just set it to fold when you are away from your computer, so that I don’t have to manually start it every night.
Not to be a partypooper, but it is a serious waste of resources. No different from using up resources from your company for any other personal use as it cranks the power draw to the limit in order to fold.
If you don’t get an immediate and noticeable for you result as with crypto mining it doesn’t matter it’s all useless and in vain. Just like with privacy. Food for thought.
