How secure is Synology NAS?

I’m considering buying a Disk Station DS220j. Primarily for backup, but I also prefer having access to files remotely. Using SSD for backup right now. I dislike having to connect it in order to access files. So, how safe is my data on a Synology NAS?
I most likely fall within zone 1.

I wouldn’t expose it directly to the internet. If you firewall it, it’s probably not a huge risk, but using a VPN would be safer.
