How do I stop my apartment building from adopting smart meters?

Thank you very much for your feedback! I really appreciate it.

I just want to clarify something about using rich vocabulary. I didn’t mean deliberately using fancy words that people don’t understand. I meant using compelling, impactful words and expressions, which you could characterize as “fancy”, but there is little doubt that the audience would understand them.

In other words, I am talking about passive vocabulary vs active vocabulary, which is something I learned about not that long ago. Active vocabulary are the words you know, understand, and readily use in speech and writing. Conversely, passive vocabulary, are the words you recognize and understand, but don’t readily use.

I’ll give a real life example. I was listening to a podcast earlier this week covering a story that the world is currently following. One of the hosts commented on the speculation around this story and said the following:

there are still things being volley balled around.

I perfectly understand what the host meant when he described conflicting information being bounced around by using the term “volley balled”, but it would never occur to me to use those words outside their sport context.

People who have a strong command of language know how to pain vivid and compelling pictures with their words, and I don’t feel like I’m where I need to be to make more people appreciate privacy issues. T

Yeah, I came to realize that a long time ago. Being an expert in a topic does not necessarily mean you know how to explain it to novices. But like I said earlier, I don’t think it’s just about clarity. You can be clear but still not resonate with people despite them understanding you.

I have noticed that in the media industry, if they have to choose between 2 experts on a given topic, and A is unquestionably more knowledgeable, but B is a more compelling communicator, they will almost always go with B.

Yes. Unfortunately, many municipalities are forcing them on their residents. I believe there is probably a way to implement smart meters by protecting residents’ privacy, but that doesn’t seem to be a priority for the people in charge. I also think there should be a way to protect tenants, because I’ve seen smart meters being advertised to landlords as a way to exert control over their tenants. I personally see potential for that kind of power to be abused.
