I’m surprised to hear the Desktop Environment (DE) criticism of QubesOS.

I remember when Qubes used kde. It was terrible. The year that Qubes switched to xfce, Qubes became my daily driver (I switched from Xubuntu).

In 2025, I recommend Linux Mint Xfce Edition to anyone who wants to try linux for the first time.

<3 xfce

As someone who only has been using Linux (with various DE hops) for about a year, XFCE has:

  • +Simple design with full practicality
  • -Slightly outdated look (not many style-points)
  • +Actually very lightweight (IMO its strongesuit)
  • -Bad highDPI scaling (global scaling setting is horrible). Most 1080p monitors shouldn’t need this though.

I almost stuck with XFCE if it wasn’t for the lackluster highDPI support. I have a relatively small 1440p laptop screen, and it just didn’t cut it.

And no, I don’t want to force the screen to 1080p lol, I paid for those pixels…
