Ente Photos brings background sync to iOS, increases file size limit and much more

Ente Photos’ new update brings big improvements to its app

Building the best photos app

Here is the summary of the new features:

  • “Birthday Memories and Notifications”
  • Improvements to the “Memories Experience”
  • “Background Sync on iOS” (already supported in Android)
  • “Resumable Uploads and Downloads”
  • “Support for Large Videos” up to 10 GB
  • “Improvements to Facial Recognition”
  • “More pleasing albums tabs”

Furthermore, this is what Ente is working for next:

We are rewriting the gallery experience to help us improve scrolling performance, and also unlock features like Swipe to Select, Jump to Date, Mosaic Layout, and Similar Photo stacking. We are expecting these to be available over the next 3-4 months.

The team is also working on new features like smart albums, an interface to clean your library, an improved image editor, and a local-first mode. Apart from these, performance improvement across the board is also a priority workstream for the team.

That’s really cool, I wonder how they did that. I was always under the assumption that third party apps couldn’t sync in the background.

Ente

I really like the Ente company and its people. I would love to support the company and migrate from Apple Photos to Ente, but unfortunately it’s far too expensive. The photos retention is a whole life for me, unfortunately it will be gigantically expensive. I’d rather have local storage and the non-FLOSS Apple Photos app. That’s sad.

I mean.. considering the amount of donations you make on an annual basis, I’m sure you can find a way to accommodate if you really want to.

That said, you can always self host Ente.

How exactly does the background sync work given the iOS restrictions? Is it a true background sync like on Android or just “yeah it keeps working for a few more minutes after you leave the app lmao”

The blog post has some information regarding this, so you should read that if you haven’t already. Otherwise, you probably should ask from Ente directly if you want more details.

It just says that they have “cracked” background sync, but not how it works.
