Best Way to Test DNS-Level Content Blocking

It is my understanding that DNS-level blocking features baked into VPNs are often not as robust as dedicated and customizable solutions like NextDNS or Control D, likely because VPN providers do not want to be overzealous with their blocking and break the functionality of their VPN.

I would like to test this theory but am unsure where to start, particularly because VPN providers do not keep DNS logs to audit against (which is obviously a good thing overall). For example, I want to test something like the default NextDNS blocklist and OISD against ProtonVPN’s NetShield with malware ,ads, & trackers turned on. Does anyone know of the best place to start?

This might have been already tested and I just haven’t found it yet.

Maybe try

Awesome suggestion. I have not seen this before. Thanks!
