SimpleX is great!

You have also Signal, but it will depend on whether or not you like the Phone Number requirement.

Sounds like you’re using the best tool, Briar. Also make sure that you’re also taking advantage of other tools, like the Tor/Mullvad Browser, a privacy friendly DNS, and so on. Even if you’re using the best tools, if you have a weak link (eg: archiving everything on Google services), you’re potentially making yourself vulnerable. Also, be wary of devices you sync to, and whether or not they’re compromised. At the very least, make sure to reboot each device, daily.

Thank you  @Blurb5778 @rollsicecream

I don’t use any google/meta services, another thing is that i also need a service for calling… at least audio calling, which is the best option available…

If you need calls, look at Signal. It’s features, and security is well documented. It should easily handle smaller video and audio calls. It’s a trusted service to most of the privacy community, and is the usual goto recommendation. The biggest downside is that it requires a phone number.

It’s not really clear to me what your threat model is or what you are trying to protect against.

Your question asks about a messaging service, and while using a secure messenger is a great idea, it seems likely solve your first problem (“our channel got deleted by the government of UK Canada and some others”). It may be related to your second problem (your friend getting arrested) but it is also may be unrelated to their choice of messenger.

Can you clarify:

  1. What your threat model is
  2. Whether you have evidence or reason to believe that Matrix/Element had anything to do with your friends arrest (and if your friends arrest is related or unrelated to your channel being taken down)
  3. What you mean when you say “Our channel”, and how it getting taken down relates to your choice of messaging service?

Answering these questions should help others give more meaningful and relevant advice, and possibly give a better understanding of what went wrong that led to this point. I think the messengers you are currently using and the recommendations you’ve been given are all good choices, which of them is best for you will depend on your threat model and priorities.

I do think simplex chat is great. If you are on an android device you can also run it through a proxy (orbot) to disguise yourself further, and the killswitch incase you ever need to fully wipe your chats

Clarifying this will make it easier for us to give recommendations. Also are you comfortable using your phone number or if you aren’t do you have ways of getting a secondary one? With signal you can now use usernames to connect to each other (in beta for now) but are still required to give a phone number at sign up.

Other secure messaging apps that support voice calls and don’t require a telephone number include Session (free) and Threema (paid).
