I loved bromite for it’s similarity to chrome, I could install it on my mom’s phone and she hardly knew the difference but loved it because she didn’t have any more ads. There was nothing else good to switch to that looked like chrome after bromite died, until cromite came along. I’ve since installed that but mean to keep a much closer eye on the project in case it dies to switch her to something else sooner than I did before. It’s a real downside of this smaller projects.

Have her switch to either Brave or Vivaldi. Both are almost a drop-in replacement for Chrome.

In function yes, but not in look (unless there’s theme stuff idk about). She wants it to look the exact same. I tried brave at least but she didn’t like it at all. Also some obscure media players seemed to behave better on bromite than even brave for some reason which is really odd with them both being chromium.

Another good option is Ungoogled Chromium from Download latest stable Chromium binaries (64-bit and 32-bit). It has Bromite patches built-in so it has strong anti-fingerprinting measures, User Script support, and the experience is just like Cromite.

For my own mobile (Android) I use Mull for default browsing, and TOR for private browsing. Don’t really use an accounts browser on mobile since I mainly have email only, and the client I use is K-9 mail. All other apps are either FOSS, or built-in apps like phone client which I have blocked internet access to.

I dont like Mull just bcs Firefox one neva have dark mode built in. Some websites I often suft doesn’t have dark theme if I use mull or fennec even I already turn dark mode on

Chromium has a feature to force dark mode regardless of whether it is available or not. Gecko browsers do not, and since Mull has privacy.resistFingerprinting enabled, it will force all websites in light mode. If you don’t mind using extensions then Dark Reader is always available.

But yeah, Cromite is a solid choice and is one of the best browsers available. My suggestion would be to use a more hardened ad filter list, since the default list does show a few ads here and there on some sites. You don’t need the lists with over 200 filters since most of the domains will overlap anyways. Try the Bromite Extended lists (I believe this is the name). These have around 20 lists that better than the defaults. You can check for lists here: https://filterlists.010.one.

The UserScripts provided the person who runs the above website with filter lists are also useful: GitHub - xarantolus/bromite-userscripts: User scripts for Bromite (mostly enhanced Ad/Annoyance Blocking)

If you don’t mind, why not Brave or any other browser which may be hardened more? Is it based on your threat model, or anything else?

This is an excellent question.

I use Lockdown Mode on iOS.

iPhone lockdown mode makes big impact’s to Safari (and other 3rd party web browser’s as all web browser on iOS run on WebKit). The main thing it changes is how Font Rendering work to protect the end user.

You add exceptions in Safari, but you can’t add exceptions in 3rd party web browser’s like Brave.

I need exceptions for almost all website I use daily like Mastodon (I use PWA I don’t want to install the native app) for personal and other websites for work.

Yup, on iOS its better to stick with safari. Android are using webview, so it works better with chromium based browser. On my phone I only use Vanadium for accounts/PWA and Tor Browser Alpha for random browsing.

The only problem with Tor Browser is Cloudflare, many of websites today are using that shit. I know it help a lot of people, but that shit are like a big wall for Tor users because of their proxy and captcha.

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve been a long-time Android user without any recent experience on iOS so it’s nice to get this insight.

Cloudflare is such an annoyance. I tried using Invizible Pro on my mobile since I felt that using TOR was better for anti-censorship at a time when we recently had a social media lockdown. The things I encountered the most were Cloudlare captchas or Sucuri Website Firewall notices. People are way too skeptical about TOR and it just saddens me because at times it is the perfect tool to use.

Wow thanks so much for the list friend

Working on my mobile RSS feeds now, I am trying to use my general browser less. It would be a dream to scrape the internet for general browsing and using TOR as my default browser to follow links.

I really don’t care about digital minimalism. This is about browser isolation. Way to effing gatekeep here and make someone feel welcome.
