Apple Passwords: I found a similar app with more features that complements Apple Passwords

Hi,

I just found an app that is similar to Apple’s Passwords app from reading a news article. It has the same design and aesthetic of Apple Passwords. It is meant to work alongside Apple passwords. As, it has credit cards, bank account, etc. that Apple password lacks.

The app is called: Access: Passwords Companion

Here is a description about the app from their site:

About Access

Access is the ultimate tool to keep your personal data secure.

Designed as a native app that pairs perfectly with the Passwords app, Access offers unparalleled privacy and security. The app is free from ads, logging, or tracking of any kind. In fact, Access is built without the use of any third-party tools or code.

Supported Data Types

Access offers several common document types for saving, including credit cards, bank accounts, and driver’s licenses.

If you would like to save something that is not listed, we recommend using the Secure Note data type, adding custom fields and attachments as necessary. You can also suggest new document types to us by submitting a Support Request.

iCloud Data Security

Access is using Apple’s industry-leading iCloud encryption to protect your information. No data is ever sent to any server other than iCloud. The app doesn’t create, access, or store keys for any encrypted data.

All Secure Data saved in Access is always encrypted in transit and on iCloud servers with the standard data protection, which is the default level of protection for iCloud. This is the same level of data protection that is used by apps such as Photos, Notes, iCloud Drive, and Wallet.

For the highest level of cloud data security, we recommend turning on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud. When turned on, all Secure Data stored in Access is end-to-end encrypted.

Your Secure Data, usage information, encryption keys, as well as your selected data protection level, are never known to the Developer.

It offers a lifetime membership for $24.99 (hidden in a menu). Avoid purchasing a monthly subscription initially.

I hope this helps Apple Passwords users,

Also, I’m unsure if this app is open source.

It’s not open source, but it is developed by a reputable indie team — I recognize some of the apps they’ve made (though Access is new to me!).

Especially for a high stakes app like this, I think it helps to know who develops it. So, for reference, here are links to the developers X accounts’:

Now—to be clear—I’m not recommending this app as I’ve never used it, but I thought it might help to provide this extra context.

Thanks a bunch for sharing that info!

I just downloaded the app, and it’s pretty cool. It seems like when the developer says there are no trackers, they mean it.

I checked Apple’s App Privacy Report, and after creating an item and using the app, no data is being sent to any servers. So, it looks like they’re telling the truth!

Not sure if this is adding any real value given the superior and open source alternatives that already exist.

This is literally for people who like the Apple’s new password manager and want something better that looks like it - in my opinion.

It’s not supposed to replace the Apple Passwords app, it’s a companion app which expands on the data categories that are available. Like adding documents, credit cards, software licenses etc.

Ah! Thanks for clarifying. I hadn’t downloaded the app so didn’t know for sure.

No worries  I do think this is a win for the average person using Apple Passwords, giving people an easy way to store sensitive information, no it’s not going to be as good as a stand-alone solution but it is very accessible.

(A lot of people store sensitive information in Apple Notes)

I can confirm, it makes zero network connections. I monitored it on macOS using Little Snitch.
