Another way of thinking about threat modeling

I think this video does a good job of exploring the idea of threat modeling in a way that is less overwhelming than how we normally do it. Reject Convenience talks about understanding your window of tolerance for how much you are willing to change it or not willing to change. I think it’s an accessible presentation for someone who is new to thinking about digital privacy.

Yeah I like this idea and it’s more or less what I’m giving my friend to.

Tbh I still wish people distanced from Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and others and this is the thing I’ve been trying to ask @Henry yesterday on stream.

If there are people who are insistent on their messaging platform or can’t open up to them, Would using something like beeper as backup messaging work while primarily using signal?

I have a few more plans to go about getting people to use my messaging of choice which is signal but I also do wonder because I understand that this would essentially be putting my hands up if that happens but if I’m gonna do it I’m gonna try it in a privacy preserving manner possible. (not at first but it’s also where I’ve been considering when it comes to threat modeling), What do people think about this?

Yeah, it can be tough when it comes to messengers because those are so sensitive and yet one of the few tools where we need the other party to be onboard.

What I settled on as a compromise is WhatsApp because at least it’s encrypted and cross-platform, but that doesn’t work for everyone. To reference the video, pushing Signal pushed my family and friends outside of their window of tolerance.
