Awesome! gonna try the 1Password beta right now.
I think passkeys are really cool, but I think I’m going to be a holdout for the time being since I really don’t like to have a password manager extension. I love using 1Password’s universal autofill which autofills in any app without an extension.
So Apple announced support and/or better integration of PWAs with Safari on iOS and MacOS.
Does anyone know if Safari WebApps ‘installed’ on iOS will be compatible with Safari browser extensions
(I’m specifically interested in whether the Adguard extension will work with Webapps)
I created a YouTube web app on macOS and AdGuard wasn’t present. So no, seems extensions don’t work with these web apps unfortunately.
There are settings for each web app, so there is the possibility that Apple may allow you to toggle extensions for them in the future. I’m going to create a feedback ticket for that actually.
Thank you for checking,
I believe (based on this latest Techlore Talks video) that some of these changes will land in iOS 17 so it may be that this changes when iOS 17 is released. One can hope.
Oh wow that’s a huge limitation actually if there is no workaround. Chromium web apps for me it is I have a couple extensions I need within my web apps.
Off the top of my head, the three things that will make Webapps / PWAs waaaaaaay more attractive to me are:
- In-app content blocking this could be one of the killer features of PWAs and a clear advantage over native apps particularly non-privacy respecting apps that are hard to live without.
- Integration with the OS that makes it feel as close as possible to using a native app. Of course there will always be some differences/limitations.
- Compartmentalization/Isolation from the browser (for example if I set my browser to clear all cookies when the browser closes, or if I manually clear history, I’d like to not be logged out of all my webapps.
An app that feels native, or at least close to it, while at the same time being able to take advantage of uBO, Adguard, or Brave’s built in tracker/ad blocking would be the holy grail.
As far as I can tell, this is actually the case. Again testing with YouTube, I was able to clear all of Safari’s website data and upon reopening the YouTube web app I was still logged in.
It’s fairly well integrated on macOS at least. Web apps even have their own separate permissions — camera, microphone, location, etc. all managed from System Settings like a normal app.
I think that Chromium-based web apps fulfill points 1 and 2. I’m not sure about point 3 - having trouble confirming whether that’s the case. However, you can set exceptions to dumping all your cookies upon closing so that your web apps stay logged in. Not ideal, but the manual workaround is there. Checked this on Brave.
Also, +1 to the web app love. Was my guilty pleasure with using ChromeOS back in 2011. My MO has been that if an app needs the internet to work (ie - it won’t reasonably work with sync or work offline), then it should live in the browser or as a web app.
I created an AlternativeTo list of PWA ! What should I add to it ?
Nice list!

@Henry You have me on a web app bender/mission now. Obsessed with finding and moving to as many as possible. Thanks for the inspiration!
